MEN OF CHARACTER

Purpse

When Joe Muecke was named Head Baseball Coach of Saguaro High School in the fall of 2013, he had a genuine interest in enhancing the reach of the program beyond the field and into the community.

Having spent the better half of a decade involved in Saguaro baseball, he felt this focus could positively impact the culture of the program.  A former SUSD athlete himself, Coach Muecke noticed that players often don’t realize how fortunate they are to play the game they love, but rather take it more for granted than for the privilege it is.

In his first season as Head Coach, Coach Muecke made it his priority to create a “family atmosphere” for his players and coaching staff. This was accomplished through team bonding exercises, family and program outings, and increased parent involvement. In line with his vision for greater community involvement and personal growth through service, the baseball team became heavily involved with volunteer work as the “Sabercat Men of Character.”

Service

As a member of the baseball program, each player is required to complete a number of community service hours in the offseason.  Players and coaches regularly volunteer at the Miracle League of Arizona, a non-profit organization that allows children with disabilities and special needs to enjoy the game of baseball.

The team also “adopts” families in need for the holidays, assists with a winter blanket drive for the Phoenix homeless, cleans community parks, participates in walks and toy drives, and serves at the Scottsdale Parada del Sol Parade, among other things.

We welcome opportunities to serve the community and give back where we can. If you know of a charitable endeavor or organization that would benefit from our program, please contact the MOC Volunteer Coordinator, a member of the Diamond Club Board, or Coach Muecke.
