Reed Austin got the Cats on the board in the second inning as he belted his 3rd home run of the playoffs. Although Travis Steinheiser held the Mustangs scoreless for 2 innings, Sunrise Mountain’s potent bats came alive in the third, as they rallied from a four-run deficit to move ahead 6-4 through four innings. Saguaro got a run back on Kyle Young's double in the top of the fifth, but still trailed 6-5 with only six outs remaining. The Sabercats then tied it in the top of the sixth when Andrew Valdez scored on a passed ball that squirted just a few feet away from Sunrise Mountain catcher. The Sabercats then pulled away, scoring seven runs in the top of the frame to lay claim to the second straight title. Chris Akmon singled in Zach Gibbons for the go-ahead run, and Matt Morris dropped the big blow with a bases loaded three-run triple for a four-run lead. Left-hander Chris Freudenberg got the win by allowing only one run in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Zach Gibbons went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases for Saguaro, reaching base in four of his five plate appearances. Austin went 2-for-4 with a double and a three-run home run.  Saguaro has gone 60-10 over the past two seasons.

Michael Benson turned in a dominant complete game effort as the Sabercats advanced to the 4AI final with a 5-1 win over Catalina Foothills. Benson scattered 6 hits and struck out 10. Saguaro would jump out to a first inning lead on a lead off a triple by Austin Anderson and an RBI ground out by Zach Gibbons. Reed Austin hit a 2 run laser shot out of the park in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Cats scrapped another run in the 4th and 6th innings.

The Sabercats beat the Sunnyslope Vikings 6-1 last night at Camelback Ranch. The Sabercats were led by the pitching of Senior left-hander Chris Freudenberg who took a no-hitter into the 5th. Freudenberg only gave up one hit over 6 innings, striking out 2 Vikings in the process. Kane McCaslin pitched the 7th, also strking out 2. The Sabercats were led offensively by Matt Morris
who went 3-3 on the evening including a double high off the wall in spacious Camelback Ranch. Chris Akmon had 2 hits and Brendon Demerest had a double and an RBI. Saguaro plays Catalina Foothills on Friday at 7:00 at C-R in a rematch
of last year's State Championship game.

Travis Steinheiser struck out 11 in a seven-hit shutout to lift No. 2 Saguaro past No. 15 Cactus Shadows 6-0 in the first round of the 4A-I tournament at Saguaro. The game was scoreless through three and a half innings, until home runs by Brandon Demerest and Reed Austin gave Saguaro a 3-0 cushion in the bottom of the fourth. A pair of errors and some timely hits plated three more runs for Saguaro in the bottom of the fifth inning, which was plenty for Steinheiser.

Saguaro's 27 game winning streak came to an end as Queen Creek's pitching held the Sabercats to just 6 hits and 3 runs on Monday night at Salt River Fields. The Cats hit the ball hard all night but unfortunately, directly to QC's fielders. Untimely errors also contributed to the Cat's demise. The Bulldog victory moved QC up in the power rankings allowing them to reach the state playoffs. The Sabercats held their #2 seed position despite the loss.

The Saguaro Sabercats made it 27 in a row on Thursday beating the Prospectors of  Apache Junction 8-2. Travis Steinheiser ran his record to 8-1 in gaining the win. The offense was paced by Brandon Demerest who hit his 6th home run of the year and drove in 3. Reed Austin hit a solo homer, his 3rd and Austin Anderson raised his average to .523 with a 3 for 4 effort. The Sabercats conclude their regular season Monday night at 7:00 against Queen Creek at Salt River Fields.

Saguaro ran its winning streak to 26 by beating region rival Cactus Shadows 10-2 on Senior Day at Saguaro. Chris Freudenberg got the start and shut the Falcons out for 5 innings, striking out 9 in the process.  Freudenberg ran his record to 8-0 with an ERA of 1.09. The offense was led by the Sabercats leadoff man Austin Anderson who went 3-4 on the day and is now hitting .515 on the season. Brandon Demerest hit his 5th home run of the season and drove in 2 as did Chris Akmon, Matt Morris and Reed Austin.

Saguaro defeated Campo Verde 19-0. Chris Akmon hit 3 home runs for a total of 9 on the season and his teammates Zach Gibbons, Teddy Ruben and Kyle Young also went deep; for Young, it was his 6th of the year. Akmon added a single to his 3 bombs going 4 for 4 on the day and is hitting a gaudy .530 on the season. Michael Benson got the win for the Sabercats. Benson is now 4-0 and has yet to give up an earned run in 17 inning pitched for the Cats.

The Sabercats got their first taste of the new Salt River Fields at Talking Stick on Monday night as they hosted cross-town Coronado.  The Dons struck first as Harlan Gatewood, batting second in the Dons lineup, jumped the first pitch he saw from Saguaro starter Chris Freudenberg and deposited it into the grass berm in LF to make it 1-0.  From there it was all Saguaro as the Sabercats sent 16 men to the plate in the bottom half, plating 10 of them.  Freudenberg settled in holding the Dons scoreless until the 5th when they got 3 on base hits by Luna, Chavez, Kittle and Buya to extend the game into the bottom half where the Sabercats picked up the two they needed for the 10-run margin.  Final score, Saguaro 14, Coronado 4.  For the Sabercats it was their 23rd straight victory.  Offensively, Chris Akmon had three hits in three trips and Austin Anderson, Zach Gibbons and Kyle Young each had two hits with Gibbons going yard.

Saguaro kept up their winning ways on Thursday, topping the McClintock Chargers 10-0 at home. In winning their 22nd straight, the Sabercats Michael Benson spun a no-hitter, striking out 7 and needing only 47 pitches in the 5-inning affair to take care of their region foes. Benson was dominant throughout and missed a perfecto by virtue of a questionable hit batter in the 4th. The Sabercats were paced offensively by Austin Anderson and Zach Gibbons who both had three hits, and by shortstop Matt Morris who also had three hits, including two doubles.

Saguaro and Notre Dame hooked up in a battle of cross-town foes at Scottsdale Stadium under the lights on Wednesday.  In a wild game, Saguaro came out on top by a score of 9-5 for their 21st consecutive victory but it wasn't easy.  The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th when the Saints scored twice on a Greco double and a Hopkins triple followed by a suicide squeeze by Scott.  In the top of the 5th, the game took turned in favor of the Sabercats as Jon Nimtz, Ben Tingley and Austin Anderson led off the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles.  After a strikeout, Chris Akmon singled driving in Nimtz and Tingley but the umpire ruled Tingley missed 3rd base and called him out.  That was all the spark the Sabercats needed as Austin Anderson then scored on a double steal and Brandon Demerest drove in Akmon to make it 3-2 after 4 1/2.  The Saints scored in the bottom half of the 5th on an RBI single by Greco to tie the game but the Cats came right back with a 5 spot in the 6th.  After chasing starter Taylor Scott, Demerest greeted the Notre Dame reliever Pilot with a bases-loaded double,  For the night the Sabercats had 15 hits, 12 of them coming from the 5th inning on.  Travis Steinheiser went the distance for Saguaro striking out 6 in earning his 6th victory of the year.

Saguaro took on Poston Butte on Tuesday night at Scottsdale Stadium and came away with a hard fought contest winning their 20th in a row with a score of 4-2. Chris Freudenberg went 4 innings, striking out 10 and Kane McCaslin and Daniel Akmon relieved him with Akmon notching his 3rd save of the year. The Sabercats were paced on offense by Zach Gibbons who went 3 for 3 and scored 3 runs, Brandon Demerest who drove in the 1st run of the night with a 2 out double in the 1st, and Chris Akmon who drove in 2 for the evening.

The Sabercats travelled to Queen Creek for a key Desert Sky matchup with the Bulldogs on Thursday. Saguaro came away with a 12-5 victory, their 19th in a row. Travis Steinheiser (5-1) earned the victory for Saguaro and the Sabercats 12-hit attack was led by Brandon Demerest (2-3, 3 RBI, BB, 2B, HR), Matt Morris (2-3, 2 RBI, BB, HR) and Ben Tingley (1-3, 2 RBI, BB, HR) who all homered. Austin Anderson (2-3, 2 BB, 3 R, SB) and Kyle Young (2-5, 2 R, 3B) also contributed for the Cat's offense.

Also contributing were Matt Morris (2 RBIs) and Brandon Demerest (RBI). Chris Freudenberg shut down the Prospectors allowing only 3 hits while striking out 7 in 5 innings of work. Chris Akmon went deep collecting his 5th HR this season.

Saguaro visited Cave Creek for a Desert Sky Region showdown with Cactus Shadows. The Sabercats struck first with one run in the top of the 1st but the Falcons scored their first four hitters in the bottom half to make it 4-1 after 1. Each team scored 2 in the 2nd making it a 6-3 game where it stayed until the 4th when the Sabercats erupted for 5 runs, sparked by an Austin
Anderson triple. Saguaro added two in the 4th highlighted by a Reed Austin home run and held off a late rally by the Falcons, winning 10-8. Michael Benson got the win in relief and Chris Freudenberg picked up his 1st save of the year. Saguaro has now won 17 games in a row. Anderson had 3 hits for the Cats and Brandon Demerest, Matt Morris and Reed Austin each had 2.

The Sabercats continued their hot pace beating Campo Verde 11-3 on Tuesday.  For the Sabercats it was their 16th straight win.  The Cats were led by Chris Akmon who hit for the cycle and Brandon Demerest and Reed Austin who also both homered.  Akmon's blast was his 4th and for Demerest, it was his 3rd.  Austin hit his 1st of the year onto Hayden Rd at Saguaro.  Chris Freudenberg threw an impressive 4 innings, striking out 4 and shutting out Campo Verde to earn his 4th win of the year.

Saguaro closed out the 2011 Spring Break Invitational with an impressive showing against host Arcadia. Alan Madsen threw a 5-inning no-hitter, striking out 12 Titans and Chris Akmon and Brandon Demerest each hit towering homeruns to lead the Sabercats, with Demerest's coming with the bases loaded. For Saguaro, it was their 15th win in a row.

In their 2nd game Wednesday, Saguaro beat Sandia Prep, also here for the Scottsdale Spring Training Invitational by a final of 16-6.  The Sabercats collected 11 hits, with Kyle Young and Jon Nimtz each collecting 2.  Daniel Akmon worked the final 3 innings to earn the victory for Saguaro, now 14-3 on the season and winners of 11 straight.

Saguaro finished their rain-shortened game Monday against the visiting Marian Catholic team from the Chicago area, here for the Scottsdale Spring Training Invitational.  The Sabercats scored 2 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd and 1 in the 3rd and then held off Marian by a score of 5-2. Saguaro got 3 hits from Austin Anderson and 2 from Reed Austin to pace the offense.  Kane McCaslin pitched 5 innings of relief to earn the victory.

Saguaro won their 9th game in a row by beating region rival McClintock 5-4.  The Sabercats trailed 4-1 through 5 innings but came up with 4 in the 6th and held the Chargers in the 7th.  Alan Madsen threw 2 1/3 scoreless to earn the win in relief of Travis Steinheiser.  The Sabercats were led offensively by Brendan Demerest and Matt Morris who each had three hits.

The Saguaro Sabercats won their 8th consecutive game 6-5 in come-from-behind fashion on Thursday, March 17 against the visiting Marcos de Niza Padres. Marcos had a 5-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings and Saguaro came up with 3 in the bottom of the 5th and 3 in the bottom of the 6th. Daniel Akmon pitched a scoreless 7th to get the save in support of Chris Freudenberg who picked up his 3rd win of the season. The Sabercats only mustered 7 hits but clustered them well and 5 of the seven went for extra bases.

The Saguaro Sabercats won their seventh game in a row and their third shutout in four games by downing the North Mustangs 14-0 in a Scottsdale Spring Training Invitational game. The Cats were led offensively by Zach Gibbons, Chris Akmon and Reed Austin who each had two hits. Alan Madsen and Michael Benson combined for a one hitter, striking out nine North hitters in five innings.

In the final match-up game in the Scottsdale QB Tournament, Saguaro didn't have an answer to Boulder Creek's pitching as they fell 10-4 at Boulder Creek.  The Cat's offense was led by Austin Anderson and Zach Gibbons whom collected two hits each, accounting for 4 of Saguaro's 7 hits.  Kane McCaslin was the SP and took the loss, while Alan Madsen and Daniel Akmon came on in relief.

The Cats, led by Kyle Young's 2 home runs and 5 RBIs, beat the Sunnyslope Vikings, 7-3 Wednesday afternoon at Sunnyslope.  The Cats had 10 hits in the game led by Young's 2 and Brandon Demerest's 2, one of which was a double off the wall.  Young now has 4 home runs on the season and has driven in 11 of the Cats 41 runs.  Travis Steinheiser went the distance for Saguaro scattering 7 hits, striking out 6 with no walks.  The Cats travel to Boulder Creek on Saturday for a noon game against the Jaguars.

The Sabercats evened their record at 2-2 by beating Mesquite 9-5 on Monday at Saguaro.  Brandon Demerest led the way for the Cats going 4-4 with a home run and 2 doubles while Chris Akmon and Kyle Young also homered, his second of the year.  Four Saguaro hurlers took the mound with freshman Turner Lace starting and throwing 2 scoreless innings. Daniel Akmon earned the win.

Austin Anderson had a double and two singles (2 RBIs), and Zach Gibbons and Andrew Valdez (2 RBIs) had two hits each for the Sabercats .   Alan Madsen was the starting pitcher going 3+ innings. Turner Lace came in relief in the 4th, and Kyle Young pitched a solid 6th inning. The Wolve's hit what looked like to be a walk off homerun in the bottom of the 7th, but the umpires declared the Wolves hitter out because the Desert Mountain team rushed the field and made contact with him while he was rounding the bases. The game was officially ruled a tie. UPDATE: Desert Mtn. appealed the umpires decision with the AIA. The AIA ruled in favor of Desert Mtn.

Saguaro came out on top 9-3 as Matt Morris lead a balanced attack with 3 hits, driving in 2.  Seven different Sabercats had hits as Saguaro scored 4 in the 3rd, 4 in the 4th and one in the 6th.  Travis Steinheiser worked 4 innings, giving up no earned runs to earn the victory. Kane McCaslin threw three shutout innings to get the save.

Saguaro beat Notre Dame 19-7 in a sloppy wind-blown scrimmage under the lights at ND.  Chris Akmon had 3 hits including a grand slam and drove in 5 to pace the Sabercats.
